Laws Pertinent to Visiting Carolina Dunes

  • Dogs / Pets on the Beach
  • Fireworks / Bonfires / Grills
  • Swimming Safety & Red Flags

While the ocean beaches in Duck are considered to be dog-friendly, there is a Town of Duck ordinance that states dogs on the beach must be under 'immediate control' of their owner.  According to the ordinance, 'immediate control' means the animal is within sight and sound of the owner and responds to audible commands of the owner.

Dog owners are asked to be sensitive to all people on the beach who are near them and to keep their pet under control so that everyone can equally enjoy the beach.

The Town also has an ordinance that requires dog owners to pick up any dog feces on the beach and dispose of it.  No owner is allowed to bury feces in the sand.

Any guest on the beach who is concerned with a violation of these ordinances may contact the life guard (if one is on duty) or the Duck Police Department.

A recap of pertinent ordinances:
  1. Dogs must be under 'immediate control' of their owner while on the beach.
  2. Owners must collect and dispose of dog feces.
The beach environment contains quite a lot of dried and flammable material that can easily ignite if exposed to an intense ignition source.  Over the years, numerous houses in the surrounding communities have burned down because of sparks flying from beach fires, fireworks, and grills.

Please respect and protect all the homes in our community by adhering to these laws and general safety tips!
Fireworks

The use of any and all fireworks is illegal anywhere within the Town of Duck, which includes all of Carolina Dunes.  This includes both aerial fireworks, as well as ground fireworks like sparklers, smoke pellets, snakes, etc.  Violations of this ordinance are punishable by a fine and mandatory court appearance.
Bonfires on the Beach

Depending upon where on the Outer Banks you go, bonfires on the beach are either allowed with a permit, or banned altogether.  Within the Town of Duck (which includes all of Carolina Dunes), as well as the communities north and south of us (Southern Shores, and Corolla), bonfires on the beach are illegal.  Violations are punishable by a fine.
General Fire Safety Tips

  • Do NOT leave grills unattended.
  • Do NOT grill on decks.
Carolina Dunes is very fortunate to have outstanding lifeguard service, curtesy of the Town of Duck.  However, the ocean is still a dangerous environment without common sense precautions.

Lifeguards are stationed at the northern ocean access walkway near Sprigtail Drive from May 1 through October 1, 10:00am to 6:00pm.

Lifeguards are stationed at the southern ocean access walkway near Widgeon Drive from June 1 through September 1, 10:00 am to 6:00pm.

Red flags posted along the dunes mean "No Swimming!" because of dangerous rip tides or surf.  Please observe!

Keep an eye on your children at all times.  Rip tides can be present even when the ocean looks calm.
