2017-08-14 - Hazards in surf zone north of Army Pier
Author: Town of Duck (Announcement Made over Email) The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Coastal and Hydraulics Laboratory Field Research Facility (FRF) has put out a notice that swimming and surfing is prohibited on the north end of the FRF property (1261 Duck Rd) to avoid a hazardous area used for research. Research instruments are mounted on 20ft-long steel pipes that are jetted into the seafloor and 3-6 ft of the pipe still protrudes from the seafloor. The pipes may even stick out of the water on very low tides. While the pipes provide stable platforms for measurements, they create an extreme hazard to swimmers and surfers and the area should be avoided. Click here for more information.
